With the opening of the new Health Center at East Ridge at Cutler Bay, the community is adopting a new change in its culture called “Choice and Change”.

Its evolution began when the community wanted to replace the existing skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. East Ridge Board Member and resident Carolyn Garwood began exploring options with a group of residents. Their research surfaced the revolutionary thinking of Dr. William Thompson who founded The Eden Alternative. Its premise was that elders could live with dignity, comfort, and compassion in a non-institutionalized environment.

The East Ridge group recognized they weren’t the first to initiate a new philosophy of care and also wanted something that would fit their Miami-Dade County community.

Through their grass roots efforts, the “Choice and Change” philosophy is being adopted at the 53-year old community and will be incorporated into the new Health Center which will offer assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing.

What does “Choice and Change” mean?

First and foremost, it means that residents have choices. Their individuality is valued and the staff is trained to recognize residents’ differences and place greater emphasis on customer service.

Services are geared to the resident rather than to the convenience of staff. It means living at East Ridge as a resident in the Health Center will be more like living in your own home. At one’s home the individual makes choices such as if they want to sleep late, when if they want to bathe and what they want to eat.

The East Ridge at Cutler Bay staff already is undertaking new training initiatives that will be adopted in the new Health Center. A culture change also involves changing the institutionalized language used by staff. For example, people no longer are discharged…they move; the living area no longer is a lobby. Greater emphasis is being place on customer service training to offer this person-centered care.

At The Health Center there will be private rooms with a choice of their design. Each suite has its own private bathroom. Corridors are shorter and there are only two households per floor, each with a country kitchen for dining.
